Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday that he will stand for election in March 2018 to try to achieve a fourth term, which would keep him in power until 2024.

“I announce my candidacy for the office of president of Russia,” Putin said during a meeting with factory workers in the city of Nijni Novgorod, broadcast live on television.
